Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal and one of India's largest cities. Kolkata is siituated on the east bank of the Hooghly river. Jute mills have existed in the region for over one hundred and fifty years. The industry reached its height in 1945 with 85 factories operating in the region. Today there are closer to 50. A gradual decline since the introduction of plastic in the 1960's.
